Cannock Chase

About Cannock Chase
Image 1

Cannock Chase Country Park is around 26 square miles and was designated as an ‘Area of Outstanding National Beauty’ (AONB) in 1985 because of its beautiful landscapes, wildlife and history. Cannock Chase is best known for its open heath land and pine forests, along with it mining and military history which stretches back several hundred years. The forestry commission started planting woodlands back in the 1920’s when as a result of World War 1 there had become a national shortage of home grown timber. Still to this day Cannock Chase is a working forest owned by the Forest Enterprise and Staffordshire County Council.

Cannock Chase is the largest surviving area of lowland heath in the midlands, where wild deer still roam. They are probably descendents from the original herds which date back to the Norman times when it was originally used as a hunting ground.

On Cannock Chase there is a Commonwealth War Cemetery as well as a German Military Cemetery containing over 5,000 German Servicemen from two World Wars. There are visitors centres located at Marquis Drive, a museum at Birches Drive and the Forestry Commissions Visitor Centre. Also located on Cannock Chase are a bike hire shop, Go Apes high wire adventure and numerous places to stay including bed and breakfasts, caravan sites and caravan parks. Please see our links page to some of these attractions.
